How to Sign Up for ChatGPT – A Step-by-Step Tutorial

Step 1: Go to the ChatGPT Website

  • Open your web browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, etc.).

  • In the search bar, type "ChatGPT OpenAI" or go directly to: https://chat.openai.com

  • Hit Enter on your keyboard.

Step 2: Click "Sign Up"

  • On the homepage, you'll see two buttons: Log in and Sign up.

  • Click the Sign up button to create a new account.

NOTE: If you have an account already, proceed with logging in under Step 7

Step 3: Enter Your Email or Use a Google/Microsoft Account

You’ll have a few options for signing up:

  • Use an email address (you'll need to create a password).

  • Sign up with Google (easiest if you're already signed into your Gmail account). —proceed to STEP 7

  • Sign up with Microsoft (if you use Outlook, Hotmail, or a Microsoft school account). —proceed to STEP 7

If using email:

  • Type in your email address.

  • Click Continue.

  • Create a strong password (at least 8 characters) and click Continue again.

Step 4: Verify Your Email

  • Open a new tab and go to your email inbox.

  • Look for an email from OpenAI (check spam/junk if you don’t see it).

  • Click the verification link in the email.

Step 5: Set Up Your Account

  • After verifying your email, go back to the ChatGPT website.

  • Enter your first and last name.

  • Sometimes, you may be asked for your birthday (this ensures you're old enough to use the platform).

Step 6: Verify Your Phone Number (If Required)

  • Enter your mobile number.

  • Open your text messages and find the code OpenAI sent you.

  • Enter the code on the website to verify your phone number.

Step 7: Start Using ChatGPT!

  • Once your account is set up, you’ll be taken to the ChatGPT chat screen. You’re all set to start asking questions and exploring AI-powered conversations!

  • Bonus Tip: Save the website to your bookmarks for quick access.
